    Posted: Mar 19 2020 at 9:51am
I have recently purchased an old M1 carbine made by underwood, serial number 2868700. I believe I have the original oiler and strap and I know I have an adjustable sight along with a twist safety that are both said to be updated but I am just a beginner on this generation of weapons. I can not find any rebuild marks on any part of the gun/stock/barrel so I am looking to this community to help me find out what exactly I have and any help is greatly appreciated.

I am going to try to put before and after photos of how I found it. Before after a rag and rem oil rubbed every part down.

cant get the photos to load maybe after I post I can put an update in.

Thank you anyone for help with telling me more about and a value on this new lifelong property of mine

yes sir! it fires very accurately and doesn't jam often unless I have soft tip rounds, the critical defense doesn't feed every 10-15 rounds the tip of the bullet doesn't slide into the barrel as it should, I was wondering if they used 30 cal. with pointed tips or maybe something needs done to the gun to fix this issue.

but yes it shoots

USGI carbine ammo is FMJ Ball ammo, pictured below. You could very well have a magazine issue not a carbine issue, magazines can be very finicky. I have not had issues shooting critical defense ammo.

that was a though I was discussing, I did not get the rifle with a magazine so I bought a 10 round mag and a 15 but both of them have the same issue, that being said it IS a 2020 magazine in a 1940's gun so yeah that could be it, I will get a box of the ammo you mentioned with the ball tip FMJ and try to get back to you In a reasonable time with how they cycle.

it is just something I wanted to mention. the critical defense sometimes will shoots 30+ rounds without an issue but sometime the 2nd cold shot is the one to jam. hopefully we can point to a mag at some point as the issue that would make me a lot happier.

I had problems with soft points feeding as well. I polished the ramp with polishing compound and haven't had a single miss fire since. It even stopped the occasional jamb with standard rounds.
You don't need to remove any metal, just make it shiny.

I take the above statement back. Critical Defense works fine in some of my carbines but I just tried to fire a magazine full in a otherwise very dependable carbine and could not get 3 rounds off without a failure to feed. Loaded the mag up with Corbon DPX hunter and it fired flawlessly.

On bottom of stock grip handle it HAD a stick on pad that I took off and cleaned wood with rim oil.

As for others I polished “feeder slots”???  And FMJ round tipped bullets shot 50 rounds without error!!!  Thanks for those tips!!

bayonet holder stamped EM-Q

Sling band stamped J.M.O.

M is stamped on the clip release

The tie down for the barrel I can barely make out as a capital L?

Not making light of things here and we all had to learn sometime.

Bayonet Holder is a bayonet stud. LUG
Sling Band is a barrel band.
Clip Release is a magazine catch.

You lost me on the “tie down for the barrel”.

I’ll take it all like a sponge, no worries. I don’t consider myself anything in this field.

And The metal that screws directly into the wood stock that is more of a sight setting at the back of barrel?  Again I know my terms aren’t correct. On the screw head I see what looks like a capitol L

After we both fool with these little guns for 75-years like some of these forum members have, me and you both will be up-to-speed on proper terminology.Big smile

That part would be called the recoil plate. The vast majority of the screws were not marked (I think). One of these smarty-pants experts will be along shortly to tell us what that L could be.

I only know of X X marks on the recoil plate screws and I say the bayonet holder is a bayonet lug.Wink
The recoil plate connects the rear of the receiver not the barrel to the stock.

You caught me on that one! I was in the midst of trying to figure out what a barrel tie down was.😄

zcurtis,
The screw that slides down thru the Recoil plate threads in to the Escutheon nut that is pressed in the bottom of the stock.
That screw is the Recoil plate screw. Some (most associate to Winchester) have a single or double struck letter 'X' on top. Some believe they are Plus marks (+) instead of x's.
The L you see on the screw head is probably a partial strike.... near the slot.

Note: Do not try to remove the nut inserted in the bottom of the stock, more than likely you'll crack/split or do some other type damage to your stock.

Getting familiar with part names and types:
Look at completed Data Sheets. Printing off a clear copy of a Data sheet would help you ID part names, locations of markings and how they changed as improvements were made.

HTH,
Charlie-Painter777

yes what I see as a capitol L could be half on an X because it is in the slot!

And again I am completely open to be schooled on anything to do with this weapon.   I do not want to go to talk about it and sound like an idiot!   At least not to a group of people I know £
