Unofficial Lost Carbines

Don Hillhouse found some carbine items of interest in the daily notes of the 358th Bombardment Group during 1944 while stationed at Horsham, near the coast North East of London.

3242232 (Saginaw) left in the EM Mess Hall
898758 (Inland)  also in the EM Mess Hall along with a gas mask.
1042945 (Winchester) along with a .45 cal. pistol serial number 711544
  194212 (Inland)

Don estimates that there were 1.5 million carbines in the European Theater of Operations on VE-Day. With as many as 20 percent of them with the USAAF the survival rate may have been very high on these carbines.

The Club records were checked with no results. If you have one of these MIA carbines or a pair of driving gloves with ASN on the inside of the cuff please report them.

First place to check is each soldier's outgoing mailed packages.LOL
1.5 million Carbines is a lot less than 6 million.

My sig: Seen an IP or S'G'? Add it to my registry. We'll check consecutives.

Another missing carbine!

This appeared in the newspaper of the Marine Corps Air Station, Cherry Point, N.C.

                       Carbine Missing
Search has been ordered on the station
for a Carbine, Serial No 3531096, reported
missing by the Quartermaster of the First
 Marine Air Warning Group.

p.3 of the The Windsock January 13, 1945

A couple pages later we learn the station quartermaster is, or was, Maj. Albert O. Woodrow.
Probably much too late to tell him if someone turns up the carbine, but you can tell us!

If one has possession of one of these carbines does it still need to be turned in to the provost marshal? Asking for a friend. LOL

3531346 021146 usmc - okinawa

250 numbers apart and both with the USMC.  Seems possible a Saginaw shipment stayed together until they got to the Marines.

That's OK.  It would have been very cool if it turned up back in the system and then copied into those books.

Thx for everything guys..... the Emails, PM's and the Prayers. Wife's health is improving. I can honestly say that was the toughest thing I've ever gone thru, feeling helpless. There were times I went days without any sleep so I could keep an eye on her until someone came to take over for a few hours. She had lost a 1/3 of her body weight before she turned the corner. They had her Meds out of whack. Couldn't get her admitted because of all the Covid patients. Probably for the best, had she caught it... lights out.

Just really appreciate all the support, Thank You Guys Hug
