I finally found some time to organize and upload photos of a couple of
carbines I came into possession of this past autumn, and thought I might share them.

It was pretty exciting to come across these two, as I don't often come across
very many carbines in my area that look to possibly be correct as issued from the factory.

There are a thing or two with each that are certainly questionable in regards to being
completely original, but they are both as close to correct as I have found in the several
years that I have become serious about collecting carbines.

They are certainly not immaculate examples, but personally I am more drawn to pieces that show some honest use.

Anyways, pictures.

First up is the UNDERWOOD.  I had a small,  M1 Carbine display at our local gun show in October,
and a fella mentioned he had one tucked away at the back of his safe for the last 20 years,
would I like to see it.

Yes sir!

As a novice collector, the two things that struck me as questionable when going
over this carbine were the stake marks (or lack of) on the rear sight dovetail.
And the front sight which is marked for IBM.

After reading up and inquiring about the front sight, it seems as though it may be
completely correct for this barrel date.

The rear sight seems to be a little more of a mystery as I have not been able
to find any other markings on the dovetail other than the punch marks that
actually seem to have been struck right against the sight base.  From what I
understand this was not common practice and therefore seems questionable
whether or not this occurred during the initial building of the carbine.

Regardless of any issues, I am very happy that this one showed up.

The IBM ...

This next carbine ended up with me after I noticed it tucked away in the
consignment section of small firearms dealers website, on the opposite side
of the country from me.  I believe they provided two pictures of it in the advertisement.
A full shot of the carbine, from each side.  Seeing the very reasonable price it was listed at,
I couldn't resist and took a gamble and snatched it up.

As soon as I removed it from the shipping box ....I figured I had done alright.

Initially I was not certain if the trigger was correct for this carbine, but after looking into it,
it seems quite possible that it could be correct.

The other issue I noticed right away was more of a condition issue than something related
to correct parts.

The end of the barrel shows evidence that it once had a extension soldered to it, but then was subsequently removed.

Due to one of our silly firearms laws in Canada, the M1 Carbine is considered a
restricted firearm (to be used at a certified range only, no packing in the bush).
Any barrel 18.5" or longer is considered non-restricted and therefore many people
added barrel extensions to circumvent this law. Now that the law has since changed
to specify the barrel length must be one continuous piece, the extensions do nothing
but make a carbine look ridiculous. So they are then sometimes removed.

Again, regardless of the fact that this is not a perfect carbine, I am very thankful to have the opportunity to own it.

I apologize for the extremely long winded post.  I look forward to learning more about them,
possibly from some of the seasoned collectors here.

Cheers

Nice picture of the front of the Underwood rear sight. Shows the punch staking that hits both the top edge of the bevel and the edge of the sight wall. You don't see that very often.

The BR-B hand guard looks to be exactly the same tree as the two stocks here I have that are made by them. Must've been an enormous tree.

It's funny you should mention the hand guard as that was one thing that
jumped out at me when I first looked it over.

This one here looks as though there is part of a knot right in the middle.
Apparently the inspector let it slide regardless of the fact that it is
totally warped.

I don't imagine this would have happened simply over time?

It could've relaxed over time and distorted, sure. Getting wet while not saturated with oil would expedite that. It's a good example of why knots should be corrected or avoided too. Pretty grain on that one.
