I have a M1 carbine rebuild marked "BA over CAB" in a square box, on the stock. The BA is for Benicia, what does the CAB stand for? Thanks. Bob.

I believe those are the inspectors initials.

From an American Rifleman article on rebuilds.

Benicia Arsenal—"BA"—Usually consisting "BA" over inspector's initials and enclosed in a box stamped on the left side of the stock.

This is still the best place for carbine information. Thanks. Bob.

I now seek out discarded Carbine stocks that bear rebuild stampings for they sometimes have interesting historical information to relate and can often be purchased quite inexpensively. The following Inland stock has been through the rebuild process at least twice. As received, it had been chemically stripped of a previous finish almost to bare wood. I subsquently applied two thin coats (more to follow) of raw linseed oil - well rubbed in by hand. I have not removed or filled in any dents or repaired any broken pieces for they are a part of the history of this stock.
