A thought on these, One of the TM manuals had drawings to build a jig to stamp the serial number forward of the rear sight is the original serial was obscured by the new rear sight.
Could it be that it was installed in the jig incorrectly to place the serial there? Jack? Floyd? Anyone else that is into the drawings?

A Jig makes sense. Numbers are neatly stamped... rolled .
Adj Rear Sights introduced about Spring of 44. May be found in a TM covering this time frame. After installing Rear Adj Sight and when instructed to restamp SN# forward of obstructed SN#/makers name. May have been just 1 Depot or Rebuild facility that did these..... And possibly for just a short time period. The front receiver ring might not be the 'Ideal Area' to be stamping on....... pretty thin metal there. Just tossing around thoughts. CH-P777
