Nice photo!  The guy in sunglasses behind Patton does not appear to be armed.  Maybe a "fake news" correspondent??

A submission from long time member and contributor Don Hillhouse

70th Naval Construction Battalion in training in US.

Our swabbies deserve a little attention since they got 800k+ carbines during WWII.

Marty Black shared this photo of GI's (Army) cleaning their carbines on a ship.

Look at the tattered pants.

It is guessed that this is early 1943 as the shirt pockets are smaller than those seen later on.

African or Mediterranean theater?  Pacific?

I am not familiar with GI clothing enough to determine if they are Army or Marines.

Very neat photo though.

I would bet that there were occasionally a few parts mixed up during cleaning sessions like that.

I certainly would never admit to being a party to it, but one needed to guard his parts carefully. I remember a couple of serious confrontations over stolen operating slides. Who wants a rusty or pitted slide on inspection day?

Judging by the worn and torn uniforms these guys may be seasoned troops who may have already seen considerable action. Are they being transported to the next beach landing?

Here's one I came across...
1944- Capt. Nieves Fernandez, only known Filipino female guerilla leader and former school teacher, shows Pvt. Andrew Lupiga how she used her long knife to silently kill Japanese soldiers during long years of Filipino domination by the Japanese.

Hi,
This guy is a "Commando Marine" certainly belonging to Commando "Trepel" (according to the breast unit badge) which deployed in Algeria in 1955 (first Commando de Marine to be deployed over there). Note the USM3 Knife (those stayed in service up to the 1990ies in para units).
As (I think) most French Army unit in Algeria  they would have had Carbine.
The Commando Marine belong to the French Navy and were formed on the Royal Navy Commando model during WW2. They perform Commando actions as Infantry units.
After the war the Commando created would be named after one of their guy dead in action.

Here is a picture Of the Trepel Commando in Algeria with the Night Scope.

I have no idea where that scope could be from. If not an American device, it may be a French one.

Good morning.  I hope everyone is doing well.  This pic was described as being Airborne from Los Banos and includes an M1A1.  I was somewhat intrigued by the sling.  My guess is it broke and the GI improvised with some rope/string but then he's carrying his weapon, not slung on his shoulder.  Any more definitive answers about the sling? SWAGs gladly appreciated...

I am sure many of you are getting cabin fever by now. When I have the time I go to Google Books. I look for old publications and read through them or use search terms like "carbine" "Infrared" etc.
I must say that it is interesting reading the perspectives published during the days long gone by.

I found this one in Popular Mechanics in an article about the combat photographer.

Some good photos can be found, also some great stuff that can be used for articles.

If you are bored open that browser. You can post a "Spotters report", pen an article, or submit it to us to see if we can use it in a future article.
