I am coming to the reality that M1's are like a box of vintage Cracker Jacks, you just never know what you may find! Since I still have my inland torn down, I started filling out the data sheet for the club and decided that I'm going to clean and reoil the stock. So I pulled out the recoil plate and found it is marked PI as it should be, but was surprised when I removed the butt plate. Under the butt plate I found a bill of sale from it being sold in 1976. How cool is that! After doing a little research I found that the gentleman that made the purchase unfortunately passed away 6 weeks ago at the age of 86. His obit says that he was A proud U.S. Navy Veteran...…..Thank-You Charles O, for your service, your M1 will be well cared for.

That is a really great find for sure. @Missle, did you put it back in it's hiding place?

I bet you paid a little more than he did in 1976.

The bill of sale is written on the back of a bank deposit ticket and of course most everything written is really starting to fade. Paper is getting brittle. I can make out that the top line reads "Received (faded) Terry (faded). Next line is (1) One M1 carbine Inland. S/N. and sellers name and address. I did block a few things out for privacy. The opposite side is the buyers name on the deposit slip. I'll have to scan it to my computer and see if I can mess with the contrast and read anymore. I'm assuming that the 1976 at the bottom is the date but it also could be a check number.

What a fascinating document to find, and it was hidden in such a clever place. Thanks for sharing the find and photo of the document.

Very cool find. It's not terribly uncommon to find information under a buttplate. I've seen it a few times on other rifles and pistols (under the grips), and many times on Swiss rifles.
My favorite such instance was when I bought my Swiss K31. Many Swiss rifles have tags under their buttplates that indicate to whom they were issued. Mine was issued to a soldier named "Albert." I'm still pretty happy with that. David Albert dalbert@sturmgewehr.com |
