I just bought an Inland ser# 5304902 that has the wrong operating slide. From my best understanding of the chart in the book I need a Type 5. Reading on here on another thread I found

"Inland used three different types of L379. 1. no increased dwell/ no 7160091 stamp 2. increased dwell/no 7160091 stamp 3. increased dwell/with 7160091 number stamped on bottom."

I take it from that it's not as simple as Type V but I learned the increased dwell was an improvement in the ejection delaying the opening of the slide.. Can someone help me so I don't shop for the wrong part..thanks

zenfly, I believe that based on your Inlands serial # that you should be looking for the Type V with 7160091 on the bottom. According to CCNL 363, the increased dwell was incorporated in Nov 1943, the # 7160091 refers to the "increased dwell modification" on the op slide. In Jan 44, there was an Ordnance Dept inter-office memo that mandated that all slides with the increased dwell modification be marked with 7160091 in order to aid field maintenance in determining if the dwell modification was completed. Your Carbine was manufactured after this Ord Dept mandate took effect. I am sure someone much smarter than me will correct me if I missed the mark on this.

Would you happen to have a picture of your Inland carbine from the top? There's a real easy way to tell if your slide has the increased dwell and you don't even have to take your rifle apart. Of course you may already know what to look for.

This slide is Quality Hardware.. Everything on the gun is Inland but the slide and the Barrel band. Edit: No..I don't know what I'm looking for here. I just learned the difference in the thickness of the box on the slide. This stuff is very interesting, thanks for the help.

Nice looking Inland. It has an early slide with the flat cam.

See the carbine with the mounted scope at the top of the web page here?
Click on it and you will go the all the info you need on M1 carbines, thanks to a most generous member here.

This is the info you need on the different slides.

It's a DA-Q

I need a Type V with the modification mark 7160091. There's an ebay add that has 5 new in the grease but I fear a new one will look wrong.

It's a very interesting topic !

I exactly have the same problem with an Inland SN 4 942 493.
I don't know which type of L379 slide I have to install.
W5USMC said there was a january 44 memo. Do you exactly know the date of this memo and its taking effect delays ?

Thank you,

Interesting that you have an all Inland carbine with a DA-Q slide. So do I.

Mine is SN 50668** with a barrel date of 2-44. I'm curious the date on your Inland's barrel and if you know any of it's history. Mine was purchased through DCM in ~1963 and came from Tooele Army Depot in Utah. Is your slide a type III (step cut, ~3/16"" arm joint width)?

Have you had any luck finding the correct type V (7160091)? I might be interested in one too...

For information, mine is dated 1-44. Has a french history.

I still don't know which type of L379 slide I have to install. I think you are in the same situation.
With or without 7160091 ? That's the question.

I have a type V (7160091) in stock.

@Juggernaut, I have an original close in serial to yours 5040XXX and it has this type 5 slide variation: "2. increased dwell/no 7160091"
Though I can't say for sure what happened in 20K rifles...

Peter23, according to CCNL 361, the first report of an L379 with the 7160091 was at serial# 5076522. Your serial is well under that so I think it is safe to say that you need an L379 without the 7160091 marking.

Thank you W5USMC.
It's very difficult to find this specific type in France.
I have to be patient.

Charlie Painter (Painter777) says: "My Inland is serial 5,061,238. Barrel dated 3-44. Type V slide marked PI inside. No number on the bottom."

So sounds like I too need the L379 WITHOUT 7160091 stamp for my SN 50668**. Darn, I'd imagine these are hard to find lol.
