You can learn a lot and keep-up with values. Some auction sites offer search capabilities for actual sales prices. You can also occasionally pick up something for a good price that nobody else is watching, but usually sellers tend to think they have something worth a lot more than it really is. Then there are unscrupulous sellers that either deceive on purpose, or from stupidity.

It is a good idea to get a right-to-return. It may cost you a little to send it back, but it's better than getting stuck with a bad deal.
