So I have a NPM with I believe original marlin barrel that had a type III barrel band at some point as it has the markings a type III would have. I'd like to shoot this carbine so a type III is not legal (don't laugh too hard). Either I was going to get a type I real or repo but the markings are driving me but because I know they are there. Is there any tricks, methods to somewhat reduce these markings?

Clear me up here...."what" does the gun have on it now, one with the bayo-lug or without? If what's on it now has no lug, I think you're legal. It's the lug that makes it illegal in some socialist locales. T3 bands are common and relatively cheap, so some owners cut the lug off and make it a T2 (which needs to be performed extremely carefully I may add). Unmarked bands are also common. Is it the band your looking at to replace the T3 that has no markings?

richg072, I am assuming that you are talking about the color difference left on the barrel from where a type III once was? Not sure there is alot you can do about that other than having the barrel refinished, which would then take away any originality.

It has a lug now. I can't have a lug in this liberal state, because bayonets are so dangerous lol 🙄I wanted to put either a real type I or a repo type I band on so I will be able to take it to the range. It's a dark marlin barrel so the markings aren't shadows it's more of the finish was rubbed off in mainly one spot on the top. I can post a pic tonight. I guess I just have to live with it or leave the lug and not bring it to a public range.

If you going to use it for shooting the Type 2 barrel band will help give better accuracy then the Type 1 band which you are considering going to.

I have heard second hand so take it for what it is worth. I was at a gun shop in your neck of the woods and they were selling a carbine with a lug. They claim that it is grandfathered as per pre 94.
again NOT LEGAL ADVICE, rather something to look into. As to reducing the shine from the T3 Band, a sharpie works well as does a dab of cold blue. It will not completely hide it which is good for collecting! I agree if looking to shoot to get e repro type 2 or a properly cut and de-burred type 3.

At one time they may of been grandfathered, but the new NY SAFE act lists bayonet mounts "Banned" Ugh so stupid. Aren't type II bands actually harder to get then type I?

They do show up from time to time but can be pricey. As mentioned previously, a type 3 can be purchased and cut down. If looking for a GI type 2 band, will want to check it isn't a cut down type 3.

If you just want an aftermarket T2 to "get by", they can be had in the $20 range off auction sites.

Ok thanks for all the advice. Just out of curiosity just how bad is the accuracy with type I bands? Is it something that would affect like competion shooting, or is it like a crappy scope that has bullets all over the place?

People say the T3 is more accurate, but for the average shooter like me, I can't really prove it. If you want the best of both worlds, you can occasionally find a Universal T2 band....if you can stoop low enough to put a Universal part on your USGI gun...LOL. They left the inner band long enough to perform the same task as the T3, in terms of supposed improved accuracy.

Yeah I'm not entering any competitions any time soon lol. I have two carbines that aren't collectors, but their barrels have no type III markings at all. I'd hate to mar them up with type III bands but I do want to shoot them. I'd like to be on the paper as well. Lol.

Gunpartscorp sells a repro Type II. Also Type I repro.
https://www.gunpartscorp.com/products/542490B If you don't have already the tools, these are good to have so as not to mar the front sight or barrel when removing the front sight. Front sight can be hard to remove or install without these tools. https://www.amazon.com/Carbine-Front-Sight-Removal-Install/dp/B00BX6VHD4 |
