BLANK FIRING ADAPTERS (BFAs) IN “PORK CHOP HILL” MOVIE, 1959

Carbine Club Newsletter #381 briefly discussed the use of BFAs in carbines used by Hollywood, both

on TV and in movies. Those observed have been merely gas restrictors that were screwed into the barrel

at the muzzle, and can sometimes be seen. The Ellis Mercantile Company repackaged GI M6 Grenade

Launcher cartridges for use as blanks. Obviously, it would be disastrous for the carbine and the actor if

a regular ball round was fired in a carbine that had this device installed!

In the publicity photo below, you can see the gas restrictor in actor Gregory Peck’s carbine, although it is

out of focus. The next page shows a BFA in the carbine of another actor from the 1959 movie “Pork

Chop Hill.”

Thanks to Vance Vasquez for these photos.
