She is a beaut! Colt made TSMGs? or are you saying Colts and a Thompson?
I see a flat Hand Guard. Were they meant to be interchanged?

My memory is foggy. Pistol grip first then they re-stamped them for something like Navy version then they removed cutout for drum mag so it could only take stick mags. What was the final model and was that the "trench broom"

LD,
Mr. Thompson's (Auto-Ord Company) contracted with Colt to make the first 15,000 Thompson Machine Guns.
These Colt made Thompsons were made for the WWI effort and nicknamed trench brooms since they could be fired from the hip in a sweeping motion to "clean" the trenches of WWI.

The 15,000 Colt TSMG's were eventually sold off to police depts. and gangsters by the time WWII started.
Savage took over the TSMG manufacturing at the beginning of WWII and continued the use of the vertical front grip until the onset of the 1928A1 model production. As a result the vertical front grip was phased out and replaced with the horizontal front grip. The horizontal front grip in the photo is in fact an original Colt Navy grip made by Remington Arms. As a side note, all of the original Colt Thompsons had Remington manufactured furniture.

Eventually the 1928A1's were replaced by the M1's in an effort to cut cost and increase war time production. The M1 model did away with the horizontal slots in the receiver that facilitates the use of drum magazines and the 30 round stick mags was introduced. During the war effort, TSMG's were continually modified to reduce costs. The original Colt Thompsons were a fine crafted firearm with the carbonia Colt finish, fine checkering and craftsmanship found on the most expensive hunting rifles of that era.

As far as the original Colt models, they were all made with the simple ring front site and the flat light weight actuator and buffer system. Collectors refer to the original configuration as the 1921A model. Then the compensator replaced the front ring site as a selling point to decrease muzzle lift, these models are called the 1921AC model. The Navy got interested in the Thompson and had Thompson modify it's actuator and buffer system to slow the ROF from 900 rpm to 600 rpm. These models are referred to as the Navy model and or Overstamps. The "1921" receiver stamping was overstamped with an 8 over the 1.

Thompson collectors are every bit as detail oriented as the carbine collectors here, with much larger monies involved. Thompsons are now selling from 18k to 50k depending on the model, condition and provenance of the firearm.

Everyone loves Thompsons :-)
