I read this book, a memoir of a sailor attached to the Sino-American Cooperative Organization, or “Rice Paddy Navy” in WWII, over the past few days and was pleasantly surprised at the number of M1 carbine mentions in it. The book leads off with an account of the author and a Chinese sergeant ambushing a Japanese patrol using their carbines, and lots of examples of Americans training Chinese guerillas to use the carbine (as well as Thompson submachine guns and .38 revolvers). There is a story about a Chinese officer examining the carbine and then demanding the author trade it for the officer’s “ancient” and presumably much heavier long rifle. 

The author also claimed to have hunted pheasants, ibis, ducks and even doves with the carbine. No photos, but still a good account of everyone’s favorite lightweight weapon.
