CarbineKid, we are on the same facebook group. I took a screen shot of that picture, and was going to post it today as the photo of the day but you beat me to it! Very cool. I have a picture of my grandfather on land on Okinawa, but he was a gunners assistant (or something like that) on a PT boat, but I have no idea why he was on land. His photo, isnt carrying a rifle, but posing in front of a large rock formation, with a cave entrance right next to him. That is about all I know about it, except that it was taken before the end of 45.

I just picked up a grouping of wartime pictures from a Seabee vet. The seller said she was the vet’s daughter and that he served in the 128th and 146th Battalions. Both were active on Okinawa. The two pictures below are supposed to have been taken there and do look just like other photos I’ve seen that were definitely taken on Okinawa. No dates on the back, but I’d say these are definitely after the island was secured. The daughter said they were definitely taken in 1945 based on her Father’s service dates.
While these don’t show type 3 barrel band equipped carbines in the thick of combat, it does show them in theater during wartime.

Cool photo! The trooper is carrying my favorite collectible in front of the helicopter that I started my aviation career in 43 years ago. Thanks for posting.

1989Lx,
Your picture reminded me of one I had tucked away. I don't think I've posted this here but did on 'another forum'. The Michigan State Police had a monthly newsletter called The Post-er. This article and picture were published in 1957. The MSP adopted the M1A1 after a bank robbery in Jackson, Mi and a long interstate pursuit of the felons. One MSP Trooper was killed and another wounded in a gun fight. The felons fled to Indiana where a IST was killed in another gun fight and a 2nd Trooper was wounded before the felons were caught. At the time, the MSP had nothing to penetrate a vehicle except for a bolt action 30.06 which wasn't practical in the confined space of a car. You'll have to magnify the article and picture for best view. Page 1 ![]() Page 2 ![]() Note that the article states this is the first Semi-Automatic weapon ever used by the MSP. The carbines staged pictures were at the old State Police Training Bureau / Post in East Lansing, Mi on the west edge of Michigan State University. That post being closed quite a few years ago now. The article also states that the M1 has a maximum range of 600 yards. (?) Must have been thinking of the Garand....... Charlie-P777

Pardon the resurrection and/or the large photo but I figured you all would like this:
![]() Reportedly, this is a Tennessee state trooper with a rebuilt M1. I'm not sure when the photo was taken but it was too cool not to share! |
