This particular bolt came from a commercial carbine. Of course, we all know that the commercial bolts can be soft, but you can see damage like this to some degree on well-used GI bolts. The question is not why it happens, but HOW it happens. This mark and mushroom seems to be in a location on the bolt that is not struck by the hammer on it's fall, but rather comes into contact with the hammer when rotated out of battery and forced back over the hammer to cock it. Is it the initial point of contact with the hammer as the bolt starts it's rearward movement that causes this particular wear?

Do you have a picture of the hammer, looking for indication of mating wear just below were the hammer hits the firing pin?
