1940-2022

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Larry L. Ruth on May 1st, at age 82 after a battle with cancer. Larry was one of the earliest pioneers of carbine collecting and historical research. He was the author of the first in-depth book on the design, development, and production history of the M1 Carbine in 1979.

This first book was based largely on documentation that Larry had copied at the National Archives over the course of several years…and was typed in its entirety by his ever patient and loving wife Jacque!

Larry remained a dedicated researcher of everything .30 cal. carbine over the decades. He published a total of five books, along with a sixth with author Scott Duff. Larry's three volume War Baby series has been the encyclopedia of the .30 cal. carbines and their history.

He was a friend to all carbine collectors, and his intense interest in carbine studies remained strong throughout his entire adult life. We are indebted to his dedication and sharing his historical research with us.

It is safe to say that no one person has contributed more to carbine collectors worldwide than Larry Ruth did. He will be sorely missed.

I have often wondered what the M1 carbine universe would look like without Larry's amazing contributions, it would be a much darker place for sure.

RIP, Larry

He was an incredible researcher and prolific writer for sure. What would we know about carbines without his work. Hats off to you, Mr Ruth, and may God speed.

Larry will be missed very much in the years to come. My only contact with him was trying to find how the Brown contract Inland barrels were marked. I had two barrels that were marked different than the rest and Larry thought they were probably the Brown barrels. He always had something he was researching. I think somewhere I have a copy of his first book that started my interest in "The Little Carbine" Thanks again Larry.
