I would like to hear people who have been around for longer than I have provide some insight on this.
I just recently acquired a NIW 30 Round SEY Hardback, and a 15 Round Winchester, also wrapped in the wax paper. I have dozens of SEY/USGI 30 round magazines, and even more USGI 15 rounders. However, these are my first that are “new old stock” (that sounds weird, don’t it?). I am kind of weird about my mags, as in I like to check (shoot it at least 3 times till it’s empty to confirm it works) before I store them or add them to my “grab and go” bag My question is, should I test these, or leave them wrapped up, and assume they will function flawlessly? I intend on never selling them (no can haz). I know they are mine and “I can do whatever I want with them” but I’m trying to make a good choice. Like I said, I have entirely to many magazines as it is (but I’m always wanting to buy more, I guess I have a problem) Thanks, carbine Gurus

Almost every NOS in the wrap USGI mag that I have had was gunked up with some type of preservative and needed a good cleaning before use.

So you would clean them and then shoot them? Lol Silly question, how would I clean the magazine? Disassemble and scrub with a brush, or soak in some hoppes or something??

I use CLP, take them apart, wipe them down inside and out. I use a patch wrapped around a tooth brush for cleaning the inside.

There's a good thread discussing solvents and cleaning. In the middle I show a before and after using mineral spirits. I may have used an old toothbrush - I don't recall. Scroll through the whole thread - lots of knowledgable folks posted. Should you use them? My thoughts are this: If they are in really nice shape and possibly a lower volume/higher interest manufacturer, those may be worth trading or selling.

thanks! I will read through that link. the 15 rounder is sealed up in its wax paper tight and perfectly, no tears whatsoever. The 30 rounder has that brown paper folded around it with some waxy oil residue. I was able to open it and examine, and it is pristine. Knowing me, I will not ever sell these or trade them. I still have t-shirts from Jr high hanging up in my closet as if I can fit into a medium from 20 years ago.

If you've got a good supply of functional used ones, then there's really no need to unwrap the NOS ones and try them out. Most are perfectly preserved (or you can usually tell if they might have surface rust based on wrap), and can pretty much be guaranteed to function fine when the time comes. Sounds like you have more than you'll end up using, and in the wrap will always be valued higher. Keep them NOS as inflation protection. This is my magazine philosophy

Have used brake cleaner spray. Works nicely and easy to wipe off surfaces afterwards.

The 15 rounder is perfectly sealed up, so I am assuming it is pristine. The 30 rounder just has the brown paper wrapped around it, and it is also pristine but oily and feel as if it would need to be cleaned up before use.

Thanks, I have some of this so I will do this method on the 30 rounder for sure as its package is bascially "opened". I may leave my 15-rounder wrapped up like a mummy (or try to, I am curious as to what it looks like, plus it is a Winchester and I have a Winchester carbine on the way )

Rebel92, I haven't been here much longer than you have but I agree with GotSnlB28.
When I first got my "good" carbine which is a G.I. bring-home from the guy that brought it, it had just one mag with it so I was immediately in the market for some more. My first 4 were 2 OI-S'G' and 2 SY-B. They were wrapped in the pinkish red looking oil paper. I opened one of each and they both performed flawlessly in the bring-home and later in an NPM shooter that I bought soon after. I've probably opened 4 or 5 more of different flavors (all USGI) since and after a thorough wipe-down, they ALL functioned like clockwork. I guess it all boils down to how many brand new mags you need or want in circulation but given my experience with NOS USGI mags, they WILL work when you need them. As far as the price difference in wrapped mags and those that aren't, at least at the shows around here and what I see online, is around $15. John |

Thanks, John. These are my only 2 NOS. And from my experience, even the old, very used, USGI magazines that look like they landed on the beaches of Iwo and are dented and the top is deformed they function just fine once I change out the spring. These often prove difficult to insert and release from my carbine, but they perform just fine. I prefer the 30 rounders (yes, I know that's sac-relig) but also buy the 15 rounders for my carbines with the earlier features (ie mag catch) and to fill the stock pouches up.
