Hey everyone just a quick question on My carbine. It is stamped twice which means two differant arsenals worked on it. The one in the pic is AAP which is Augusta Arsenal, the other I can't find anyware which is AOS?. I belive the "P" behind the AA is ment for Prtical rebuild only because this rifle has a complete mixture of Items. To start off with it's a Whinchester first ser# run #1154536 which dates it to 1942. I know everyone says #'s don't mean acutal build year but this was part of the first awared #'s for Whinchester after the 10 prototypes so I couldn't imanige they did not make them asap. This rifel was purchased out of the back of a American Rifelman Magazine in the 1960's. I have owned the rifele since it was given to Me when I was 10 I am now 54, and it has been In My possan ever since. I am going to sell this rifele and just trying to figure out the last markings so I don't miss represent it to the future owner thnx.

Welcome to the forum, your serial# 1154536 was stamped on that receiver on 16 July 1943, which means that the completed carbine was sometime after that date. Other letters are often seen after the AA rebuild stamp, see link below. As far as the AOS marking goes would like to see some pictures.

I've been searching around off and on since you posted about the AOS stamp.
I haven't found any reference to any Arsenal or Depot.
Now being able to see your picture the AAP Rebuild stamp looks older than the AOS stamp, but I can't be sure.
By chance have you seen any stamps on your metal other than the usual US applied markings?

Best I've done was found that AOS during WWII stood for AOS - Air Observers School.
And I've only found this designation used by the Canadians and British so far.

These were Observers, Pilots, ground crews, security... etc.
Is it possible your Carbine was a lend / lease to Canada? I don't know.
But here are a couple links about the Air Observers School and bases / battles:

And this which probably doesn't pertain but thought I'd better add it.
There was also use of AoS by the British and probably Canada (?).
Where AoS  stood for Arm of Service. Which meant vehicles had to have a type of signage / insignia / Crest to identify it's Unit. Also use of certain colors to tell which branch and organization.
Here's a link, but I think this one leads no where:

Maybe some help, maybe not. I know Norway's coastal watch marked the metal KART.
MAYBE it's possible that Canada's Air Observers School marked the stock when they went thru their 12 week+ training program that including rifle training.

This is a Wild A$$ Guess,

That sounds logical painter777 Idk like I am finding out theses rifles were used and sent anyware and everyware can't be the only one though. It is a not so standared rifle meaning it only has some of the upgrades from Augusta Arsenal from the list posted on this web site abut what they should have got. Like it has the new site, mag well with the "M" on the release new style 4 pin upper wood and the slot oiler. But still retained the flat bolt and charging handel assy, also it retsined the push buttoun safety not the lever. It is stamped with a "S" next to the mag well which if anyone knows I would appreate knowing what that is. Also a #10 in the sling cut out I was told that was proberly a arms rack position number? It retained the Whinchester barrel it is stamped with a "W" but no date the front bayonet lug stap is stamed AI ? the rear site is stamped LR.Co no stamp on front site. The stock has the orignal P wich Winchester put as oringnal and also the P with a square around it which designates rebuild which i got from this site.trying to post more then 1 pic.

The marking in the sling well is actually an OI, representing SE Overton for Inland.

Wonder why the S under the stock?

I really hope I'm just seeing more of Winchesters rough milling.....
But looking at this picture below, Does it look like a hairline crack on the receivers right rail.

Compare to this picture from the Metal Fatigue on both commercials and GI carbines, post linked below

Follow this link towards the bottom of page 1. Clean and dry the receiver and turn it over then seep some light oil in the right slide track, leave it upside down. Look for any seepage on the top rail later.

I hope it's just milling marks.

The Serif S does stand out against the sans serif AO
I would think unlikely Auto Ordnance had anything to do with rebuilds, especially post Korea.

Though they made the Thompson they had issues with bolts and I think slides which created a backup for IBM. Ordnance might have had issue with them.
on top of that...
In the early 50s Numrich Arms in West Hurley NY bought the companies stock on hand and built their own Thompsons for law enforcement.

Interesting side note is that it seems unclear if Numrich bought the company name as they usually buy surplus from companies going out of business,  or did Numrich just started a new business called Auto Ordnance Corporation.
AO was sold to a group which owns Karh arms in the 90s and the controversy has been is it really the same company.

I'm familiar with that history. I think the current AO just bought the rights to the name. The current Inland did the same thing. Just speculating on whether or not the original AO might have tried for a rebuild contract like Underwood and Std Prod. So much we don't know.
