A fellow collector friend of mine has a SG carbine with a barrel that has markings only on the flat. My limited research only points to MAYBE it being from a M1903 or is some replacement I don't know about. Can anyone shed some light on this barrel for us? The marks on the barrel flat are inspection marks. Perfectly normal... The front sight has the typical shallow groove found on many Saginaw front sights. Looks pretty Saginaw to me..... ------------- OGCA Life member NRA Life member Ashtabula Rod and Gun Life member |

In the 2nd and 4th pictures, with what looks like a new finish over some old pitting, is it possible the mfg mark was removed? Without a full picture of the barrel where the mfg marks would be it's hard to tell. Is the proof mark present? I agree the barrel flat markings look right. There are unmarked barrels out there that slipped through I have an example with an unmarked Underwood on a Std Pro but that one has never been refinished. Very neat serial number btw. |

this photo of the top front does not show the typical machined step-down of the barrel behind the front sight. After reading CCNL 358, this suggests that this barrel is from a M1903. I personally don't think that is a M1903 barrel. My guess is that the barrel has been turned down/machined down, maybe to remove an import mark or excessive pitting. Take some outside diameter measurements of that barrel in a few different locations (near the muzzle, an inch or so behind the rear sight, a few inches forward of the gas cylinder). ------------- Wayne USMC Retired NRA Life Member |

At the muzzle and an inch behind the front sight both measure at 14.62 mm. Two inches forward of the gas cylinder measures at 15mm. The gas cyclinder is not welded on nor is it pinned as seen on other 1903 barrels. ------------- Discipline equals Freedom ! |

The 1903 barrels were not welded, the rear of the USGI demilled barrel was salvaged, bored out to accept a machined down M1903 barrel.  This was soldered in place and you can usually see this at the breech. note how not lined up perfectly  Sometimes you can see excess solder in this location. The barrel not being consistent in size supports the barrel is not machined, rather worn and possibly sanded. The barrel flat markings are consistent with SG
