Spotters Report: M1 Carbine Shipping Box

Prolific collector and an interminable submitter of the rare and odd, Marcus Rust, shares pictures of a shipping crate.

According to CCNL 332-8, carbines, magazines, and oilers were dipped in preservative lubricating oil and allowed to drain before being wrapped.
Ten magazines and oilers were wrapped together or put in a bag, and 10 slings would be wrapped together and placed in a bag.

The bottom had a removable separator to hold 5 carbines in alternating directions. Another separator would be put on top of the carbines and 5 more carbines put on top. The magazines, oilers, and slings were added and the lid nailed shut. The crate would then be steel banded to secure the box.

Here you can see an outline of one of the bands.

That’s something I’d love to find!

Interesting that it does not appear to have any markings indicating the date it was packed or an ordnance bomb or crossed cannon on it. I wonder if that was on the lid?
