Once the 8th edition is distributed amongst us, I'm curious to know the page count, and if any specific observations of new material are noted. Does anyone know if Riesch performs all new research himself, or is anyone here on this board involved? An 8th edition could be as simple as the 7th edition printing running out, and adding any corrections or new material that has been sent the author's way. Or, it could be a significant effort to produce an expanded edition with lots of new information, based on original research, or an expansion of subject matter. There's no wrong answer...I'm just curious to learn about the author's approach, and whether I should run out and buy the 8th edition to replace my 7th edition.

Thanks!

I was wondering about the changes as well.  Google books list 235 pages but other than that I can't find anymore about it.  Midway's description isn't updated and even North Cape Publications doesn't have an updated description for Rev 8.  You would think they would.  Oh well, I ordered one anyway.

It's cheap. Someone should buy, compare then resell.

Some how, I wound up with a spare copy of the 7th edition. If anyone is interested in it, calculate the postage from your location to Rockville MD, send me a check and your address and it is yours.

Received my copy today from Midway. It is in fact the 8th edition, there are 236 pages. Just glancing through it there are no significant changes. Some added figures here and there, chapter devoted to magazines. No corrections in the areas that I had written notes, for instance still says RSG is a Rock-ola made stock, B/R hammers are Rock-Ola. Will go page by page when time permits.

For everyone's general info regarding Riesch getting assistance from those of us who have authored/started & operate this forum and website.

Last year we were contacted by an employee of the publisher on behalf of Riesch (correction Joe Poyer and North Cape Publications) requesting permission to use a photograph we have on BavarianM1Carbines.com. I personally took the photograph with my camera while at CMP. I e-mailed the publisher's rep giving permission and provided a higher resolution better quality of the the original with an offer to share more if anyone was interested.

I indicated credit for the photo should go to the website or The Carbine Collector's Club, not me. The photo appears on page 206 in Riesch's 8th edition. The caption credits CMP for the photo. Since we support CMP, and I personally strongly support CMP, that it gives CMP credit is a non-issue.

What is an issue (next paragraph) is a symptom of a much larger problem with Riesch's book. A problem that has been consistent in each edition.

In the paragraph directly above the photo: "Circa 1952, the U.S. Constabulary allocated Bavaria Police M1 Carbines to Austria..." then the sentence continues onto the next page.

This information is incorrect. The carbines Austria obtained from Bavaria were purchased from Bavaria by the Austrian Gendarmerie 1955/56. After the Occupation of Austria (and Germany) had ended and the U.S. Constabulary forces had left. I know this from having done the years of research on the carbines used by Austria and West Germany during and after which I authored the web pages on BavarianM1Carbines.com.

Not a big mistake but a mistake that has been consistent with a fair amount of the info in Riesch's books.

I've never met Riesch. Have never communicated with him. I only know him through the info that appears in his books. I personally chose to use his part variation designations on our websites, not without some serious criticism from another very gifted researcher and author I respect greatly. Someone other than Larry Ruth. The reason I used those designations is the carbine owners of the world wide web had already adopted them as their common language.

Every author makes mistakes. Myself included. One reason I don't do books and use web pages instead is so I can correct mistakes in a timely manner. Book authors normally include corrections in subsequent editions.

Every author has their strengths and weaknesses, their own areas of experience and knowledge that others may not have. One big reason the Carbine Collectors Club and it's foundation, the Carbine Club, has existed was/is hoping to bring the various different experiences and knowledge together for the purpose of learning, documenting, and sharing the history of the .30 cal. Carbines with everyone.

I'm not going to be critical of Riesch or his book. I've owned and read a copy of every edition as they became available. What I will say is Riesch's books have had a significant number of small inaccuracies that collectively make the books unreliable as a resource for information. A few inaccuracies have been corrected over time while more info and inaccuracies have been added. Such as the one described above.

I'll add that these inaccuracies are truly unfortunate given the popularity of this book. Most could have been avoided if Riesch networked with the researchers whose work he has reworded for his book. I'm not thinking of myself as I'm typing this. The example above is very minor compared to others over time.

My offer of sharing and assistance remains open to Riesch and others. With over 300 web pages and growing, albeit slowly, being an example. I am not the authority on carbines that some people assume I am given these web pages. I have other researchers and people with a lot of knowledge over many years who proof read what I write. This is a joint effort by those who are The Carbine Collectors Club. I'm just one of them.

Jim, Well said, thanks for posting this. Maybe your post should be added as a book review for Riesch's book in the Books and Publications section on the main page.

The serial breakout for probable parts versions is handy for observations but please, please continue to educate newer enthusiasts to NOT use them as a reason to build or breakup Carbines in a particular manner. Especially on the CMP website where most of them read/post. We all probably recommend the book as a starter for it's price point.

Personally I've had a scare with someone about to part an NPM due to the serial breakout published in Craig's book. It took more than the normal amount of persuasion to save an original configuration from being parted just so that a correction could take life. The early features like the dogleg trigger group didn't line up with the linear layout posed in Craig's tables for a mid 4 million.

Germany is still occupied.
