6 Lb Carbine Owes Its Design to the Bee Bee Gun

Dayton Daily News
Port Clinton Ohio June 4, 1943

The Bee-Bee gun, a toy which most American boys have riddled empty tomato cans, provided ordnance with the idea for one of the army's newest weapons.

The new firearm - a vicious little 30 caliber carbine combining lightness, firepower, and accuracy at battle ranges - was demonstrated to newsmen for the first time today by the war department's Cleveland ordnance district. Production is now nearing full scale at the Standard Products company's plant in this Lake Erie town.

Ordnance officers said designers of the carbine had at their disposal one outstanding fact - nearly every American boy of military age had owned, at one time or another, either a bee-bee gun or a .22 rifle or both. Every American knew at least something about handling a rifle, and a call was sent out to inventors and designers to submit models of a light, semi-automatic rifle.

Weighs Less Than 6 Pounds
The carbine is a short-barreled rifle, only 36 inches long. Like the Bee-Bee gun, it weighs less than 6 pounds, including strap and cartridge clip. That's about 3 pounds lighter than the newer Garand.
"in combat, it has been the best weapon for the individual ever turned out," says Col. Forrest C. Shaffer, commanding officer of Erie proving ground.

Adapted to Jungle Fighting
"The carbine is especially good for jungle fighting. A soldier can carry four or five times the amount of ammunition for this gun as he can for the Garand. It'very effective at short ranges, having greater accuracy than the .45 caliber pistol which is handled expertly by only a few men at ranges over 50 feet"
The new weapon is readily replacing the .45 caliber pistol as a standard sidearm, the colonel says. Easy to handle, it can be fired "commando style" from the hip or the shoulder

I  hope this is not what was meant by "commando style"

Sharp-Shooting Capt. Tim Hughes, former Kentucky state trooper now in charge of tactical military police unit at nearby Camp Perry, described the carbine as "a damn good weapon" with a trigger that has "a good, stout pull"

Dozens of man and women assembling the guns 65 parts have an incentive for making them perfect. They are fathers, mothers, wives, sisters or sweethearts of 32 Port Clinton men captures or killed with Gen. MacArthur's 192nd tank battalion on Battan.
Standard Products, one of the several concerns producing the carbine, employs more than one-tenth Port Clinton's total population which has nearly doubled since the start of the war.

Some interesting propaganda, Discussion?
