Karl, Thanks for sharing. Is the color khaki or faded green? The 1945 date seems late for khaki, but that may be the fungus proofing company.
I did some looking and it seems the case and the M8 cleaning rod are not inclusive to the M1 carbine. Here is a 1944 marked case I have. Marked P.M.&S.CO 1944. No markings on the aluminum T handle. Here is a case marked Fungus Proofed - Type 1 J C (or G) BIRCK CLNG CO Inc_1945 The T handle is marked C & S Tool Co. With possibly a drawing number. This is an interesting one as the the part number has a suffix M1-C6573A. As I understand it this would designate an alternative way of manufacturing that is acceptable. Notice it is 5 pockets instead of 4 (4 sections with small pocket vs. 3 section with small pocket) A 1942 manual states 4 pocket but the picture shows the 4. Being that it is khaki but bottom binding is OD I would thing 1943 transitional, though could be earlier. The T handle is steel and possibly zinc coated. There is what looks like an "N" in a circle on one side and the other looks to have a "C" but looking close it looks like there are more characters that are obliterated. If anyone has a Case, Cleaning Rod, M1 and/or an M8 cleaning rod please share them below.

Nice wall hanger but I wouldn't use a steel cleaning rod in any barrel, especially an M1 Carbine.

Don’t want to drift too far here, but you don’t find muzzle erosion caused by cleaning rods mentioned as a serious subject when discussing most any other 30-caliber military rifle. Why is the carbine so seriously prone to it?

Hi,
A friend found this M8 rod, no case, steel handle with a N circled and and J. Did not find anything about the N(or a Z sideways?). It was found in an old hardened grease. |

There is only 1 rivet, like on the other N-marked one.

Think about how many times the Carbine is fired as compared to a sporting rifle and how often it needs to be cleaned.
