Will begin reloading soon. I'm committed to H110 powder b/c I have an abundance of it. Stuffing brass w/ 110gr FMJ. Any hints on what's the sweet spot powder load?

Might be carbine specific and may not apply to everybody, but my shooters will cycle a fairly broad range of loads . Anywhere from 13.7 to 15 grains with 110-grain projectiles and 16.5 to 17 with lighter bullets. Somewhere between 14.5 to 15 will probably keep it happy.

On the subject of what is the best load, rifles are like a mother-in-law with bad ovaries. Ya never know what will please them. Sometimes nothing will so one has to decide 'what's good enough'. I had a wife like that.............briefly. Thanks for the info!

With H110/W296, I load, across the board, 15.0 gr. with any and all 110 gr. jacketed bullets. O.A.L. will vary depending on the bullet, but what I did was use a Hornady 110 gr. FMJ and its recommended o.a.l. to establish how much bullet is IN the case. I then duplicated that with all other 110 gr. jacketed bullets and get velocities that are quite consistent. One thing to remember with M1 Carbines- They're not match rifles. So the little things we're accustomed to doing to increase accuracy such as cleaning primer pockets, matching case length precisely,, using all the same brand of brass, etc. are all pretty much lost to a platform that is doing good to group 3" at 100 yds. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with doing these things (I do them myself), but on the range it's probably not going to make much difference.

What projectile are you using?
I used 15 grain H110 with 110 Hornady soft point round nose and the 110 full metal jacket for a long time. My current load uses Hodgen LilGun, I like it, in rapid fire situations, the felt barrel heat is lower, velocity is 2050 FPS at 10 feet. The FMJ is effective on level 3 soft armor in close. My standards for accuracy are 1" at 300 yards so you understand that the M1 Carbine in my view is not a target rifle in any sense of the world. With that said I found it to be the standard for CQC rifles for over 20 years and a leading contender for the next 50 years. Excellent for quick action out to 200 yards. The Carbine saw regular combat action from 1942 well into the mid to late seventies and I'm sure with many other countries after that In shoot and scoots I love it, using 9" paper plates as targets, keeping all in the 6" center in close and fast is the goal, (2 shots semi-auto in 3 seconds) as well as slow fire out to 200 yards from supported positions. I kind of like the old girl! |

I use 14.5 gr. of H110. Works well in all of my carbines and is accurate. Pushes 110 gr FMJs an avg. of 1950 out of most of them and varies just a little bit depending on the individual carbine.

I agree with Smoke, but I have gotten slightly better ballistics with A-2400, 13.4 grs, 110 gr PRN bullets, 10 round average velocity 1979 fps, ES 15, SD 7, out of my Std.Pro. Maybe a little dirtier, though. Have fun, great little round to reload for!
